I recall attempting to reinstall the OS to fix was kind of a PITA (I think I had to trick the date/time to get it to work?) but it did upgrade (still did not fix the issue). The RAM was a great upgrade and the SSD was great, but something may have gotten messed up in data transfer (or the SSD was actually not good) and now the OS freezes up randomly which sucks. I upgraded my old 2012 to 16GB of RAM and an SSD from crucial.

Apparently performance with Logic pro at least has been stellar even on those entry-level models.

If I still used the 2012 and wanted to upgrade, I'd have no hesitation going for an M1 mini or laptop from what I've been reading. The keyboard and trackpad is MILES better on the 2012 though-the 2016 had the horrible butterfly keyboard (two keys barely worked on mine within a year) with a huge trackpad that my hands bump if I type on it-not a huge issue though as it stays closed with external mouse and keyboard. Both have 16GB of ram, neither has an ssd although I do use an external ssd. I will say that my 2016 macbook pro can handle a lot more plugins and tracks that my 2012 could. My point is that at some point all hardware fails.Īll that said, you obviously have experience with hardware-for more than I do- so I'll leave it there! The battery is also pretty much gone, if it's not plugged in it goes dead in a second. Granted, I used it for work so it got a bit more use going back and forth than a machine that sits home. I actually have a 2012 machine and a few things don't work on it, the wifi for one (some kind of hardware issue). Like cars, I tend to use computers for a good long while 2012 is pushing it for me for sure though. When I worked for Apple I got certified on these units but was a call center jockey. I've done the same type of upgrade on a 12" Powerbook G4. To upgrade to a 480GB internal SSD (and enclosure for the old drive) and 16 GBs of Ram it will be $214 before tax and shipping from macsales. Other than a handful of 3rd party plug-ins I'll be using the Logic plugins which I really like.

I don't see any reason to replace the optical drive. I'll still store my audio projects on an external HD. I was planning on installing a 480GB internal SSD and 16 GBs of Ram. I've already ran Disk Utility and my HD can not be repair. Most of the time it's ok but other times it struggles and will stop in the middle of tracking. My mid-2012 MacBook Pro (non retina, 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor) still has the original HD and 8 gigs of ram.

I store the files on an external HD and them mix them (with vocals other instruments) on a fully loaded 2015 27' iMac in my mixing room. I currently record 16 channels of acoustic drums from my Focusrite Clarett 8PreX and Focusrite Octpre Mkii Dnyamic with a mid-2012 MacBook Pro into Logic.
